in which I wonder why I feel the sudden desire to decorate.

Really, all I’ve wanted to do lately is decorate an apartment. The whole shebang: kitchen, living room, bedroom, bathroom. You name it I want to adorn it. I’ve always enjoyed interior design—during the winter of 2007 HGTV was my channel of choice besides TCM, IFC, and Sundance, naturally— though I’ve never considered becoming a full-blown interior designer. It’s strange to me how I get so much satisfaction out of cleaning and arranging furniture and knick-knacks in new ways. Ahh, and don’t even get me started on colours! I could make colour palettes and combinations all day. You could take me to Home Depot and I’d go crazy in the paint section.

I desperately feel like hunting in thrift stores and antique stores for old couches and other furniture, but what’s the point? I don’t have anywhere to put it. All of the apartments I’m going to rent in Santa Barbara are temporary so I don’t want to put TOO much effort into a place I’m not going to be living in for very long.

For now, let me dream of my future out-of-my-budget New York studio/Parisian flat/Los Angeles apartment/Swedish loft wherein I will have assorted pillows on my couches and bed, paper lanterns hanging in my bedroom, shelves brimming with books and DVDs, Christmas lights strung along the walls, murals, candles, porcelain figurines, matryoshka dolls, glass jars, old globes, floral wallpaper, weathered maps, mirrors, wood floors, film posters in bold frames, and taupe, cerulean, periwinkle, cool greys, creams, pale pinks to make me feel like I’m living in a Bat for Lashes song.

Or, if that doesn’t happen I’d be totally down to go for the Robert Crumb art studio look. Have you seen Crumb? Watch Crumb, his studio is awesome. If you haven’t seen Crumb, watch Ghost World. The way Seymour’s bedroom is decorated is based on R. Crumb’s art studio (or so I have read) and goddamn it I dig it!

After braving the dregs of fall quarter through writing last-minute essays, putting in hours of studying as well as putting off hours of studying, and ultimately having to endure final exams, winter break has finally made its way into my life. And I welcome its leisurely stay with open arms.

I am going to take advantage of this break like no other! I did not mean for that to sound rapacious. Anyhow, unlike all of the other promises I make to myself, I do not intend on breaking the one I’ve made for this break which is simply to be productive. I have a series of projects that I’ve had lined up since back in September so there is no way I can pull the “I kind of got tired of this project” excuse.

It also goes without saying that I’m going to watch as many movies as I can with my newfound free time. L’eclisse and Les Amants, I’m looking at you. Probably going to try to watch A Serious Man—pour la troisième fois. Definitely going to watch Almodóvar’s Broken Embraces with Felipe on Christmas day because that’s the kind of people we are: cool ones. (Just kidding, I’m not cool. Felipe is, I’m not.) Excited!

On the topic of films (then again, when am I not talking about films? Is that a problem? Eh, screw it), last night I finally watched Up. And you know what? I was thoroughly disappointed by it. Pure garbage!

No, I’m kidding. I feel it lived up to its praise; it was whimsical, the perfect blend of heart-crushing and humorous, and the opening montage is beautiful.

Anyway, it’s noon and I’m still in my pajamas. Time to seize the day and other clichés.
